1/4/2010 9:48 PMOPEN WORLD LEARNING COMMUNITY Our school is poised to undergo some exciting changes over the next several years. Our new name, Open World Learning Community, was the product of a process that involved input from students, parents, and staff members and represents both continuity with the Open School program and change. The Board of Education has accepted both this name and our proposal to spend the next three to five years becoming and Expeditionary Learning school. In addition to becoming an Expeditionary Learning program, we will enjoy an extended and enriched school-day schedule next year which will allow all students access to theater, woodworking, History Day, Destination Imagination, and other great enrichment learning activities as well as support in skills and academic work. The Expeditionary Learning School model promotes rigorous and engaging curriculum; active, inquiry-based, project-based pedagogy; and a school culture that demands and teaches compassion and good citizenship. Students are involved in rich study topics called EXPEDITIONS that require deep investigation and original research with experts from the community to create high-quality products for audiences beyond the classroom. - elschools.org The teaching staff at O.W.L. Community will be visiting excellent E.L. school sites this spring and will spend three weeks this summer designing expeditions and planning for the 2010-11 school year. All teachers and students will engage in at least one expedition next year and across the curriculum in coming years. We believe that our small K-12 school can be a model for urban learning and teaching and are thrilled to have this opportunity to create a state-of-the-art program that serves individual learners in the context of strong community relationships.
