Homecoming -- a huge success!
12/14/2007 12:30 PM

Our homecoming was a huge success!  Alumni, current students, Open School founders, former teachers and community supporters participated in a fun filled day of activities, food and socializing.  The afternoon matinee of “An Italian Straw Hat” and the Scholastic Book Fair were well attended and the orchestra finale was a beautiful way to end the day.

Many of the Alumni who attended were from the school inception in the early 70’s.  As we contemplate the future of Open School, it’s interesting to know more about our past.  From old newspaper articles and chatting with alumni, we learned that the original Open school included lofts for students, pets to take care of and even briefly had a ski team. Students were free to use the theatre to act out skits and the basement housed a workshop for wood, metal, leather and lapidary work.   At that time, the school band consisted of 5 guitar players!

Alumni reported how thankful they are for their Open School experiences and many expressed a sincere desire to volunteer at Open School.  Some of the possibilities include:

•    JJ, who would like host talent shows at Open School
•    A published author of science fiction offered to work with students
•    Auto body shop owner happy to bring a vehicle to share.

Homecoming could not have happened without the help of parent volunteers, staff and students who went the extra mile and stepped in when help was needed!  Seeing volunteers and staff work together was heartwarming!
