1/16/2008 1:29 PMThe February Newsletter is now online. You can view or download a copy here. Here is an excerpt from the February newsletter: Science Options Explode at Open School This year, Open School went from 1.5 to 2.5 science teachers! How do you get a half of a science teacher? Our beloved math teacher, Tom Totushek, is at long last revealing his physics prowess by teaching a year-long series of thematic physical science classes: Astronomy, Mechanics, and Potions. Watch for Tom's high school physics class next year. Teaching science to students in grades K-8, Anna Butler brings experience from outdoor settings, including Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, to Open School. Anna brought her middle school Ancient Life, Rocks, and Minerals class to Lilydale to hunt for fossils. Retired Open School science teacher Julie Doble chaperoned. Open School elementary students are getting their hands wet with a lot of hands-on labs. Welcome Anna! In Megan's classroom, we are making the most of our laboratory equipment, funded in part by a 3M Ingenuity Grant. Exciting potions are bubbling over as Chemistry students learn how to turn pennies into gold and Advanced Placement Biology students study the photosynthesis in spinach suspensions. Marine Biology middle school students have learned about the ancient ancestors of whales and are gearing up for a field trip to the Minnesota Zoo's Discovery Bay. In Biology class, we're so excited to learn the human brain that we're making a life-size Jell-O model. Megan welcomes guest speakers and visitors - see our website at www.open.spps.org/Science or drop us a line if you'd like to stop by!
